I know that my family is not alone in feeling completely over these cold Winter days. Unfortunately I cannot melt ice, create sunshine, or speed up seasons – but I can introduce you to a place full of warmth and color that will surely add some brightness to these long, gray days. Located in downtown Hillsdale, just a short drive South of Jackson, Toasted Mud is loaded with activities, classes, and opportunities for all ages. If you are looking to get in touch with your creative side, then this is the perfect place for you!

Toasted Mud in Hillsdale, Michigan

Toasted Mud Details

Location Name:  Toasted Mud

Address: 74 N. Howell St. Hillsdale, Michigan

Why we love it: When you visit, you will be able to choose from a wide variety of items to paint. The staff will take care of set up and clean up (which is an incredible blessing when you have kids). When you have finished painting, they will glaze and fire your project for you and then give you a call when it’s complete. It really is so simple. They have a great selection of items when you’re choosing what you want to paint. There’s a great variety of sizes, so even tiny hands can find the perfect piece.

Toasted Mud also offers classes, story times, Toast to Canvas nights, and take-home projects. The take-home projects include painting kits that you can purchase in the shop and then complete at home with your children (call ahead to reserve). You can also pick an item to paint at home (coffee cup, plate, cute little measuring cups, whatever you’re feeling), and then bring it back to the shop to have it fired and glazed.

Alyssa’s Suggestion: A reservation is recommended, but walk-ins are welcome!

Toddler Approved: Yes!

Big Kid Approved: Definitely.

Stroller Friendly: Yes, however, I’d be conscious of busy times as it might be difficult.

Cost: Regular Paint & Glaze options start at $5 and go up from there. The price of the object you choose also includes all of the paint and supplies in addition to the glaze and firing (which is amazing, in my opinion).

Parking: Street Parking is available but there are also nearby parking lots in downtown Hillsdale that are marked.

Hours: Monday / Tuesday: 10 AM – 6 PM.

            Wednesday – Friday: 10 AM – 9 PM

            Saturday: 10 AM – 6 PM

            Sunday: Noon – 6 PM

Website: Toasted Mud doesn’t currently have a website but you can find them on Facebook. Their team is incredibly responsive to phone calls (where you can also make reservations!), and the staff is beyond kind and knowledgeable.

Phone Number: 517-439-1677

Closing Review:  Traveling anywhere with toddlers or young children can feel scary, especially when there is paint and breakables involved. Toasted Mud has set up an environment that is sure to bring an afternoon of enjoyment, bonding, and ease.

The owner, Jonna, opened the shop thirteen years ago, and she has truly found a way to offer something for everyone regardless of age or skill level.

My son and I had a delightful afternoon here with friends and we will absolutely be visiting again. The entire staff made such an impact on me from the time I created my reservation, to the actual visit, to picking up our finished projects. They were so kind, knowledgeable, and passionate about what their shop offers.

I cannot recommend it enough! They can’t cure winter, but you will definitely leave feeling brighter.
